Responsible Gambling
Last reviewed: 24 May 2026
Gambling should be entertainment, not a way to make money or to cope with stress. Most adults gamble socially and within their means, but for some it becomes a source of harm. This page is our short, honest guide to staying in control and to the UK support routes that actually work.
Set your limits before you deposit
Every UKGC-licensed operator we list is required to offer deposit, loss, session and reality-check limits. Set them when you create the account, before any money is at stake. A useful starting rule is to treat any deposit as the cost of an evening out — money you have already decided you can afford to lose entirely.
Warning signs
- Spending longer or more than you planned
- Chasing losses or borrowing to gamble
- Hiding gambling from people close to you
- Feeling restless or irritable when you cut back
- Gambling to escape from low mood or anxiety
Any one of these on its own is a reason to pause. Two or more is a strong cue to use the tools below.
Free, confidential UK support
GamCare — 0808 8020 133
The National Gambling Helpline is open 24 hours a day, every day. Conversations are free and confidential and you do not need to share your name. GamCare also runs free in-person and online therapy across England, Scotland and Wales.
GAMSTOP
GAMSTOP is the national self-exclusion scheme. Registering with GAMSTOP blocks your access to every UKGC-licensed online casino, sportsbook and bingo site for six months, one year or five years depending on your choice. It is free and takes about five minutes.
BeGambleAware
BeGambleAware funds the National Gambling Treatment Service and provides regional listings of face-to-face support, family counselling and structured therapy.
National Gambling Clinic (NHS)
The NHS runs specialist gambling clinics in London, Leeds, Manchester, Sunderland, Stoke-on-Trent, Southampton, Bristol and beyond. Self-referral is available without needing a GP letter.
Practical tools that help
- Bank-level gambling blocks (Monzo, Starling, Lloyds, HSBC and more offer one-tap blocks)
- GAMSTOP plus a third-party blocker such as Gamban for non-UKGC sites
- Setting deposit limits low and only raising them after a 24-hour cool-off
- Telling a trusted person what you have set
If gambling has stopped being fun
Stop. The phrase "when the fun stops, stop" is widely repeated for a reason. There is no shame in stepping back — most people who seek help describe relief at finally talking about it. The numbers above are staffed by trained advisers who hear from people in every stage, from first concern through to long recovery.
